About Laser Tattoo Removal
Learn about the science behind laser tattoo removal, what laser we use, how long it takes, what to expect, how it feels, more about permanent makeup removal, color tattoos, and different skin types.
What Laser We Use
We use one of the most trusted and advanced Pico Lasers on the market. It holds up to four wavelengths (1064nm, 532nm, 585nm, 650nm) that treats all colors of ink, including black, gray, purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, pink, and red. The pulse duration fires at the speed of pico seconds, enabling precise, safe, and effective treatment every time. This laser can also remove benign pigmented lesions, such as sunspots, freckles, birth marks, skin tags, and skin rejuvenation.
Color Tattoos & PMU
All permanent makeup can be removed with our lasers, including brows, lips, eyeliner, faux freckles, etc. Our lasers are equipped with the proper wavelengths to remove or fade all colors, including purples, blues, greens, yellows, oranges, reds, and of course black and gray. Note that some colors are more difficult than others for any laser on the market to remove.
Does It Hurt?
Laser tattoo removal feels different for everyone. Some people say it feels like a rubber band snapping your skin, some say it feels like getting a tattoo. Most people end up saying "that wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be."A cryo machine is used throughout your entire treatment, blowing freezing cold air onto your tattoo to ensure comfort. We also offer numbing cream before the start of treatment at an additional cost. Note that it has been proven that pain sensitivity can vary throughout the month for people who menstruate, typically at its worst during the luteal phase, so keep that in mind when booking.
The Science Behind Laser Technology
During a tattoo, ink is injected into the dermis of the skin. Your body attempts to remove this foreign substance (the ink), and that's why tattoos fade naturally over time. Lasers shoot high-intensity light beams through the top layer of the skin, hitting the pigment. The ink absorbs the energy, shattering the ink into smaller particles, making it easier for the body to remove this foreign substance through the lymphatic system. Note that removal and fading is generally slower for tattoos where there is less blood flow, such as fingers, wrists, feet, and lower legs.
Different Types of Skin
Those with darker skin (Fitz V-VI) have a higher risk of side effects with ANY laser treatment, including tattoo removal. With the appropriate laser and proper knowledge, settings are tailored to protect the skin.
What Are The Risks?
Laser tattoo removal can cause temporary side effects such as redness, swelling, pain, bruising, itching, pinpoint bleeding, scabbing, crusting, blistering, and temporary skin color darkening or lightening. Infection, permanent scarring, and permanent hypo/hyperpigmentation changes are rare but possible risks with any laser procedure. Treatment may reactivate pre-existing skin conditions, autoimmune disorders, or HSV. Allergic reactions are very rare but have been reported if the tattoo ink contains Mercury, Cobalt, or Chromium. Tattoos with Iron oxide can turn red-brown or black upon laser treatment. Tattoos with Titanium oxide (typically white ink), can also turn black upon laser treatment (oxidation). There is no way for us to tell what elements are in your tattoo, but rest assured that majority of tattoo ink used over the past few decades is hypoallergenic.
How Long Does A Tattoo Take To Get Removed?
It is all dependent on the tattoo itself and your health. The laser does half the work by breaking down the ink particles, and your body does the other half of the work by processing and expelling the ink. The depth of the tattoo, the location of the tattoo, the color of the tattoo, and the age of the tattoo are all considered when estimating how long the removal process will take. It is commonly said it takes an average of 8-12 sessions to remove a tattoo, but we have seen complete removal after only two sessions, while some as many as sixteen sessions.
Older vs Newer Tattoos & Stick and Poke
Older tattoos are usually easier to remove than newer tattoos. That is because the body has already broken down some of the ink over the years, making it easier for the body to eliminate what is remaining after a laser treatment. Stick and Poke tattoos are typically more superficial in the skin, making them easier to remove, as well.
How Long Do I Have To Wait Between Sessions?
Six weeks is the gold standard for how long you should wait between removal sessions. This gives your body a chance to eliminate most of the ink that was zapped, as well as give your skin a resting period. Coming more often than every six weeks will not make the tattoo go away faster. Spacing your sessions farther apart will not negatively impact last treatment's effects.
When Can I Start Removal After Getting A Tattoo?
Tattoos that are not heavily shaded can start the removal process after six weeks of getting the tattoo. For a heavily shaded tattoo or blackout tattoos, it is best to wait 8-12 weeks. The peeling stage must be completed before any laser treatment. The wait time for permanent makeup is also six weeks.
